Northern Flyfishing Equipment List:

Arctic Grayling:

Whitefish: 5-8 wt. flyrods with weight forward or double taper flylines, and intermediate sinking line. 7-10 ft. tapered leaders with 2X-5X tippets.
Suggested Flies: Same fly selection as for arctic grayling.

Lake Trout: 8-10 wt. flyrods with weight forward floating and sinking flylines (the sink rate depends on the depth at which the lake trout are holding). A flyline with a sinkrate of approximately 3-5 inches/s is a basic choice. Lake trout leaders, or a 10 ft. tapered leader with a 25-30 lb. mono tippet.
Suggested Flies: Ciscoe and Whitefish Spread Flies, Cotton Candies, Fireflies, 3"-4" minnow imitations, and Dahlberg Divers.

Walleye: 6-8 wt. flyrods with weight forward and sinking lines (sink rate of approximately 2-4 inches/s). 7-10 ft. tapered leaders with 0X-3X tippets and short 1½ - 2 ft. leaders for sinking lines.
Suggested Flies: Whitlock's Hare Pup, Soft Crayfish, Gray Ghost, Clouser Minnow (red/white, chartreuse/white), Lefty's Deceiver.

Great Northern Pike: 8-10 wt. flyrods with weight forward floating flyline, Pike / Muskie Rocket Taper. Sinking flylines (weight forward or Monocore/Scientific Anglers) with a sinkrate of approximately 3-5 inches/s. Pike leaders with a nylon-coated wire tippet
Suggested Flies: Dahlberg Divers (mega and rabbit strip), Spread Flies, Fireflies, Cotton Candies, Clouser Minnows (red and white), and Zonkers all in the 2/0-4/0 range.

Reels: a good quality reel is suggested with the available space for approximately 200-250 yards of Dacron backing when flyfishing for lake trout and northerns.
